ERP vs. CRM: What Each One Actually Solves

September 28, 2026 · 1 min read

ERP and CRM get mentioned in the same breath often enough that it’s easy to lose track of what each one is actually for.

A CRM (customer relationship management system) is built around the sales and customer-facing side of the business — tracking leads, deals, customer communication history, and support interactions. If the question is “where did this deal come from and who’s talking to this customer,” that’s a CRM question.

An ERP (enterprise resource planning system) is built around the operational core — inventory, finance, procurement, and often manufacturing or logistics. If the question is “do we have enough stock to fulfil this order” or “what did this cost us to produce,” that’s an ERP question.

Plenty of growing businesses genuinely need both, connected to each other so a sale in the CRM correctly triggers inventory and invoicing in the ERP. The mistake is buying one system and trying to stretch it to do the other’s job — a CRM bent into inventory management, or an ERP bent into lead tracking, usually ends up doing both badly.
