A Practical Guide to Migrating Off Legacy Hosting
September 28, 2026 · 1 min read
Migrating a website or application off old hosting is usually postponed for years because it sounds riskier than it is โ and then rushed once the old host finally causes a real problem.
The technical steps are well understood: audit what’s actually running (including the parts nobody remembers setting up), provision the new environment, migrate data and files, test thoroughly in a staging copy, then cut over DNS during a low-traffic window with a rollback plan ready.
What actually causes migrations to go wrong is almost always incomplete discovery โ a cron job nobody documented, an email service tied to the old server’s IP, a third-party integration that whitelisted the old host specifically. None of these are hard to fix once you know they exist; the damage comes from finding out after cutover.
A migration done properly is closer to an inventory exercise than a technical one: know everything that depends on the current setup before you touch it, and the actual move becomes the easy part.
